Why can't I reconcile my first bank statement?

Usually because the statement's opening balance has nothing to stand on. The books reconcile a statement only when it starts the account at zero or follows a statement already reconciled. Otherwise Deline says "This statement neither starts the account at zero nor follows a reconciled statement. Your accountant must decide how to evidence its opening balance."

Why does it work like this?

So the books never take a balance on trust. The bank account's starting amount must come from your opening balances, a zero start or the last reconciled statement.

What can I do?

  • Enter the bank account's balance in your opening balances on the day your books start. See Bring your books over from another program.
  • Import statements from the day your books start. A statement that starts earlier shows "Your books open this account on …; this statement starts on …." Press Start it on ….
  • Reconcile statements in order, without gaps. A gap shows "Opening … doesn't match the last closing … (…)."

Other reasons a statement won't reconcile

  • "A period covering this statement is locked."
  • "Another statement of this account already ends on that date."
  • "The statement is not linked to this bank account in the books."
  • "Some bank lines are not matched yet. Tick their suggested match above, or record a line that is not in your books below."
